How can I start beekeeping safely at home?

The Native Irish Honey bee, also known as the Black Bee (apis mellifera mellifera) is best-suited for the Irish climate and environment.
When is the best time to harvest honey?
Harvest honey late summer after flowers have bloomed fully to ensure quality.
What protective gear do I need to keep safe?
A veil, gloves, and a light-colored suit are essential for protection during hive inspections.
How do I maintain hive health throughout the year?
Regular inspections and treatment for mites help maintain a healthy colony.
Can I keep bees in an urban environment?
Yes, with proper hive placement, urban beekeeping thrives. Ironically, urban areas can have greater diversity in forage for bees and less pesticides etc. But, it depends on your location and home configuration… important to talk to neighbours before setting up a home apiary. If in doubt, try find a rural location instead.
